Research Abstract |
In this research, we clarify the meaning and the limit of modern agriculture specialized in rice crop and the development direction of sustainable local agriculture by investigating and studying the example in Japan, Sri Lanka, and the Kingdom of Thailand. The large-sized water supply dams were built on three rivers, i.e. Kase River (Japan), Nam Phong River (Thai Land) and Mahaweli River (Sri Lanka), and the irrigation plants modernistic at their valleys are constructed. But their development costs turn water into goods. Economical predominance of water for industry and city to agriculture is emphasized from the point of cost effectiveness and priority is given to the former. On the other hand, respective rivers have traditionally peculiar small-scale reservoirs controlled by farmers such as Ao draw water system and creeks (Japan), ponds (Thailand), and cascade style small reservoirs (Sri Lanka). Developing of sustainable irrigation agriculture will need to link these traditional system

s with modern system. In these countries, we can find out the agricultural machines, fertilizers and agrichemicals getting powerful year after year to meet decreasing fertility, reinforced insect pests which make decreasing agricultural income with increasing productive cost and lower price. There is progressing class specialization of farmhouses, like the upper farmhouses expanding management areas, the middle inclining to compound management, and the lower seeking non-agricultural job or retiring from agriculture. The influence of using many of agrichemicals and chemical fertilizers to the safety of products and environment, is recognized among farmers in these areas. A new grope centering on organic farming is started. Reexamination of traditional local agriculture, such as self-sufficient compound agriculture utilizing small reservoir (Thailand), compound agriculture with stockbreeding in jungle (Sri Lanka), has started. The new agricultural-products circulation systems based on the concept "Producing locally, Consuming locally" including agricultural-products outlets (Japan) or community markets (Thailand), have started too.
