Research Abstract |
We investigated phylogeography on several widely distributed plant taxa in Sino-Japanese region, Houttuynia cordata, Rumex nepalensis and several genera, Cycas and Phyllodoce. Geographic distribution of cpDNA haplotypes found in Houttuynia cordata and Rumex nepalensis shows clear geographic barrier demarcated east and west at North West Yunnan Province in China. The geography of NW Yunnan is characterized three big river running from north to the south and high mountain range between the rivers, which formed by upheaval of Himalayas attributed to collision of the Indian Continent and the Eurasian Continent in the Tertiary. We estimate that widely distributed plants in Sino-Japanese Region were divided west and east at NW Yunnan after the geographical event in Tertiary, and genetically isolated. These plant taxa in Japan, the Ryukyu islands and Taiwan share the same haplotypes in the eastern China, no genetic differentiation was recognized between the islands and the continent.
