Research Abstract |
The purpose of this project is to improve learning environments in higher education with ICT (Information and Communication Technology). Nowadays we often use digital contents of Web pages, Powerpoint documents and so on in a lecture, which is surely convincible and appealing to students. It is, however, so difficult for students to take notes of a lecture with digital contents rapidly changing as a Powerpoint slide-show. Furthermore the presentation with high performance could sometimes weaken deep understanding and critical thinking because of the power of conviction. To overcome these drawbacks of using digital contents we need at least to have a learning environment for reviewing the lecture where pictures and the documents of the lecture are synchronously replayed under the control of learners. For this purpose we already have several commercial or non-commercial systems. They, however, mostly require special hardware or software, for instance, the use of Powerpoint, which increases burdens on lecturers. In this project we have developed a simple and inexpensive system, where both a digital movie of a lecture and digital documents used in the lecture are automatically recorded and synchronously replayed in a Web-site. The digital documents are screen shots of a Windows personal computer which are captured with SSC (Synchronous Screen Capture) of newly developed software when one of the previously defined operations of a keyboard or a mouse is put into action by a lecturer. The synchronous presentation is realized with a script of SMIL. The system has been already built into the educational information system of Hokkaido University.
