Research Abstract |
The Japanese Chestnut (Castanea crenata) was one of the important food for the Jomon people. If we want to discuss the chestnut utilization of the Jomon people, it is necessary to use the quantitative data about some characters of modern wild Japanese chesnut. But we did not have such data. So in order to get the date, from 1999 we have investigated the wild chestnut in the secondary forests in Obara-mura in Aichi Prtefecture. This article analyses the annual fluctuation of nut production of wild Japanese Chestnut from the results of the investigation between 1999 and 2003. As a result, it can be considered that every tree of wild chestnut has the marked annual fluctuations of nut production. But the production of each tree does'nt always fluctuate in syncronized with other ones. If anything, every tree tends to fluctuate independently. Therefore it is concluded that we can recognize the annual fluctuation of nut production of the whole area, but it is smaller if the area is relatively broad. So we have no very poor harvest. Due to these characters, the chestnut was very stable food for the Jomon people.
