Research Abstract

We recorded authentic simultaneous interpreting used in TV programs on Channel NHK-BS 1, and selected five programs out of the recorded broadcasts according to such criteria as authenticity and quality of interpretation. The soundtracks of those programs were stored on computers and CDs in the file format provided by a computer software called DigiOn Sound Light so that the temporally relation between the source and the target languages may be shown to a precision of one tenth of a second. The audio material for the total length of more than 100 minutes was also transcribed in a way both the original English and its Japanese interpretation are reproduced literally with their temporal occurrences displayed in parallel.
The analyzed data produced intriguing aspects of utterance comprehension, which could be described with the notions of conceptual complex and cognitive tagging. A simultaneous interpreter functions as a speaker as well as a hearer and what expression s/he uses reflects what s/he understands as a hearer. Sometimes dynamic rather than formal equivalents are found and a justifiable word-level discrepancy may be analyzed as transformation of a conceptual complex, which has been triggered by some stimulus, linguistic or out of background/encyclopedic knowledge, in the preceding context. We came up with a model, in which utterance comprehension progresses from the formation of a conceptual complex to its transformation, integration with other complexes, and fading. Such micropropositional analysis of utterance comprehension is expected to fill in the gap in the previous linguistic research on language understanding. The present research furthermore provides for a theoretical foundation of simultaneous interpreting.
