Research Abstract

This Research aims to develop the Family Reunification Support Program which helps infants living in residential care homes to return to their own families safely in a short period.
In the first half of 2003 year, case records from residential care home "Jiaikai Seishin Nyujiin" were investigated, and social workers in this home were interviewed by the researcher in order to make clear the problems of family reunification supports in their routine work. As the result of this researches, it was found that in the first assessment most cases were probably classified into three types. In the first type, there is no possibility of reunification. Children in such cases are almost abandoned by their parents or cannot help livid alone because of death of parents. In the second type, there is much possibility of reunification. Parents in such cases have no choice but to leave their children in residential care because of their temporary illness and so on.. And in the last type, possibility of re … More unification depends on supports of social worker. These cases have such complex problems as child abuse or addiction of parents. So it is found important for social worker to give high priority to the last type in order to reunify the family. Next the research suggested that social worker had to choose approach unit intentionally between nuclear family unit and extended family unit.
The results mentioned above were published in the report "How to cope with the future problems in Jiaikai child welfare institution- Research into family reunification support program for infants living in residential care home : the 1^<st> report"(2004).
From the last half of 2003 year, this research in which parents leaving their children in this care home were interviewed looked at the differences between families which could be reunified and families not reunified in order to search for concrete methods of family reunification. Important differences are as follows. 1,Motivation of parents to take care of their children. 2,Emotional bond between parents and their children. 3,Supports from extended family member. 4,Active use of social resources. And as effective support skills it is important for social worker to keep parents and their children contacted, to coordinate a conflict between parents and their family of origin, and not only to inform parents of social resources but to connect surely them with social support network.
On the basis of these results, "Research into Family Reunification Support Program for Infants Living in Residential Care Home(the final report)"(2006) and "Intergenerational conflicts emerging in process of family reunification : Usual family therapy practiced by social worker in residential care facilities for children"(2006), which could afford family social worker in residential care homes methods of effective family assessment and skills of family reunification, were published.
