| Research Abstract |
The main purpose of this project is to make complete searches for Hα emission stars of the T Tauri and related types in a nearest star-forming molecular cloud. We planned to make the most of the superb seeing conditions of Mauna Kea Observatory, Hawaii, and the wide field of view of the newly developed grism spectrograph WFGS2 combined with the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope. L1457(=MBM12) was originally selected as the target region, but it has been replaces by L1642, because, just after the application for the grand-in aid, the former was found to be located farther away(300 pc) than used to be thought(65 pc).
WFGS2 became available only toward the end of 2004 due to a delay in its completion ; so the observations were carried out in 2005 January. We could finish only some 50% of the survey area on account of limited telescope time and the poor weather conditions, and the rest was kindly observed by Dr.Magakian and his collaborators at the Byurakan Astrophysical observatory, Armenia, using the 2.6m telescope and the grism spectrograph SCORPIO. However those data show no Hα emission stars excepting the already known two double objects. Therefore we have to conclude that this project failed to achieve its goal.
I collaborated with Dr.D.K.Ojha and others in photometric studies in the near-infrared on W3 Main and NGC 7538. We have detected a large number of low-mass young stars in these high-mass star-forming regions. In view of these interesting results I embarked on survey observations of HII regions to locate Hα emission stars of T Tauri and related types by using a grism spectrograph on a 2-m telescope in India. Eight HII regions were observed in September 2005 and altogether some 140 Hα emission stars and 15 Herbig-Haro objects have been detected. I also took part in photometric studies on young open clusters NGC654 and NGC663, which are about 12million years old and still bear some information on their formation process.
