Research Abstract

Recently we found that the molecular mixture of simple oxygen substituted TTF derivatives and fatty acid spontaneously forms a conducting Langmuir film on the water surface. Such reaction is very useful for obtaining conducting Langmuir-Blodgett(LB) films with its simple and easy preparation aspect. The aim of this project is development of this method and establishing it as a tool for the upcoming research field of molecular electronics. During the period of project, we carried out several studies and obtained useful knowledge as being summarized in the followings ;
1.Exploring new molecular combinations
There is a possibility to prepare novel conducting LB films with new molecular combinations through the above reaction. We examined the newly synthesized TTF molecules, EDO-TTF-SC_<18> and BEDO-TSeF, to make the combination with acetic acid(AcA) and stearic acid(SA). For both EDO-TTF-SC_<18>/AcA and BEDO-TSeF/SA, the above reaction proceeded to provide conducting LB films. The results indicate that the chemical reaction proceeds in the wide variety of molecular system of oxygen substituted TTF derivatives and fatty acid.
2.The reaction with carboxyl-terminated self assembled monolayer(SAM)
The reaction between BEDO-TTF and carboxyl-terminated SAM was examined for obtaining electrical conducting SAM. It was found that BEDO-TTF reacted with carboxyl-terminated SAM forming a layer of its thickness 9Å, but the film was not homogeneous and contained a lot of islands. These researches were carried out as join research project with a research group of Dr.D.Villaume (IEMN-CNRS, Lille, France).
3.Application for biosensor
It is known that organic conducting material can be used as a mediator for electron transferring in amperometric enzyme sensors. As the first step for this application, we examined the immobilization of glucose oxidase in the BEDO-TTF/SA LB films. The results indicate that a certain amount of glucose oxidase can be absorbed in the LB films.
