Research Abstract

In the present research, following four topics are studied for the application of conducting polymers to energy device materials such as catalytic electrode for fuel cell, radiation resistant material, semi conducting photocatalyst and corrosion protecting film. The results obtained are summarized as follows.
1)Application to electrocatalyst for fuel cell
It was found that platinum dispersed polyaniline electrodes exhibit high catalytic activity for both anodic and cathodic reactions of direct methanol fuel cell. The effect of pre-deposition of base metals onto polyaniline surface was studied to reduce the amount of expensive platinum. Tin is the most effective co-catalyst for the anodic oxidation of methanol, and iron is the effective co-catalyst for the cathodic reduction of oxygen.
2)Application to radiation resistant material
It was found that polyaniline is more stable than common resistant polymer, polystyrene, against the irradiation of gamma ray with high dose rate.
3)Application to visible light photocatalyst
Although the yield is not so remarkable, the desired product, salicylic acid, was formed when poly-3-methylthiophene was irradiated with visible light in the presence of carbon dioxide and phenol.
4)Application to anticorrosive material
Dual coating of polyaniline film and electropolymerized film of aniline derivative having triazine-dithiol is quite useful for the corrosion protection of iron in both acidic and neutral solutions.
