Research Abstract

A digital EEG network system (Biologic) was introduced to our University Hospital in 1997 using a university LAN (NICE). Since then, doctors have performed tele-EEG readings at the office far from the EEC laboratory. In 2002,this network system was expanded to the outside hospital already introduced the same EEG machine using a commercially available telephone line (ADSL) and an online storage system (Medical data center). The EEG data was successfully transmitted each other. But the upload procedure of the EEG data was needed longer time than download one especially using ADSL. The purpose of this study is to provide an expanded remote teleconsultation system for the better EEG readings and trainings including the different EEG machine (Nihon Kohden). The hardware and software design architecture for PC-based EEG teleconsultation system is described including the file exchange program (Insight) for the different EEG machines. The file exchanges to Insight are performed successfully from both EEG data of Biologic and Nihon Kohden machines. There are some problems, the difficult to handle Insight program, the harder recognition of the Insight EEG pattern and slower working speed of the program. The data fie capacity of Nihon Kohden EEG is larger than Biologic one because of higher sampling frequency and without file compression system. Tele-transmission of file exchanged EEG data is successfully performed using NICE, but it is difficult to transmit using ADSL. The file compression program for Nihon Kohden EEG is not available now. The faster telephone line than ADSL is needed for the constitution of this system. The further study is needed for a PC-based EEG training system.
