Research Abstract

Pueraria mirifica(PM), a perennial plant of the Leguminosae kudzu genus wildly growing in Thailand, has been valued high as folk medicine of perpetual youth and longevity among women from ancient times. We checked the estrogenic receptor(ER) binding by molecular biology technique about miroestrol that is a main effective chemical ingredient. Then we did a double-blinded clinical study whether PM was effective in a treatment of menopausal disorders under an approval of an ethic committee. After we got a written consent from each, 23 healthy women (40-50 years old) complaining menopausal symptom enrolled in this study, and divided into two groups ; taking 100mg PM or placebo. We assessed subjective symptoms, blood pressure, pulse rate, height, weight, clinical tests (blood counts, hormones, lipids) at control period, two-month test periods and after test periods. During the test periods, plasma FSH was significantly decreased, serum total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol significantly decreased, and HDL cholesterol increased significantly in PM group, but not in the placebo group. A woman reduced PM dose to one-half since she recognized tension of the breast on PM taking. There were no subjects who had shown newly recognized abnormal blood test during test in both groups. Those results are correspondent with the results of a hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women.
