Research Abstract |
We have found that sauna therapy, a thermal therapy, improves impaired vascular endothelial function induced by life style-related diseases such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes mellitus, smoking and obesity. We have also found that sauna therapy increases the expression of gene and protein of endothelial nitric oxide synthase in an experimental model using hamsters. We, therefore, aimed to investigate whether sauna therapy inhibited progression of atherosclerosis through improvement of vascular endothelial function using apoE knockout mice. Forty one degrees Centigrade sauna therapy for 15 minutes followed by 20 minutes at 34 degrees Centigrade raised the rectal temperature by about 1 degree Centigrade and remained elevated for about 20 minutes. We used 6-week apoE knockout mice in this study, because apparent atherosclerotic legions are observed at the base of aorta in 12- week apoE knockout mice. Twenty 6-week apoE knockout mice were divided into 2 groups, sauna and control groups. In sauna group, they were treated with sauna therapy, once a day and 5 times per week. In control group, they were kept in an experimental sauna system switched off for 35 minutes. They were sacrificed after 10-week treatment and then aortas were resected. Microscopic measurement of aortic atherosclerotic area stained by Sudan III revealed that sauna therapy reduced atherosclerotic lesion area at the base of aorta (0.072 ± 0.03 mm2 vs. 0.22 ±0.14) In conclusion, these results suggest that sauna therapy has a potential to inhibit the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis
