| Research Abstract |
Cell tropism of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) Oka strain was investigated for the pathogenesis by the in vitro infection of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) obtained from healthy adults. After a short incubation of VZV and PBMCs,VZV DNA was quantified in sorted subsets of T cells of CD3,CD4 and CD45RO,B cells of CD19,CD20,CD21,CD22 and CD74, and NK cells of CD16,CD56 and CD57 using a real-time PCR assay. The copy numbers were relatively large in a part of NK and B cells. In the comparison between the positive and negative cells, NK cells of CD56 positive adsorbed VZV significantly more than did the negative cells (p=.008). This cell tropism may be one of mechanism of escaping from immunity to decrease the function in NK cells and may be associated with transient absence of NK cells in life threatening chickenpox which had been reported.
