Research Abstract

Adult volunteers were recruited as subjects. Bruxism patients were diagnosed based on the following clinical criteria : a history of tooth-grinding occurring more than 3 times a week for at least 6 months, jaw muscle fatigue or discomfort in the morning and the presence of tooth wear. Furthermore, the patients were examined using an electromyogram (EMG) recording system along with a video recorder in their homes and were confirmed according to the following experimental criteria : more than 4 bruxism episodes occurred per hour, more than 25 EMG bursts per hour, and more than 2 tooth-grinding sounds per night.
The mean frequency and duration of bruxism episode in bruxism patients were higher and longer than those in normal subjects, respectively. The incidence of temporomandibular disorders(TMDs) including internal derangement of TMJ and osteoarthrosis of TMJ in bruxism patients is significantly higher than that in normal subjects.
Therefore, it is suggested that the sleep bruxism is one of the causes of TMDs.
