| Research Abstract |
We have been doing a dental treatment for the aged or handicapped patients at the health care facility for the elderly requiring nursing care in our college,. The capacity of the facility is 85 people (mean age : 83 years old), and more than 80% patients want to receive dental treatments. The doctors of the Department of General Dentistry performed dental treatment and oral care at the dental clinic in the facility. Most of the patients had dementia, cerebrovascular or cardiovascular disorders as systemic complications. We are examining the oral conditions and the degree of periodontal diseases of the patients and analyzing their plaque bacteria. However, the patients in this facility leave there after a short period, and it is difficult to monitor them for a long time. year of the project. But the machine requires too long time to measure, so we could not apply the machine for the elderly people. We are now planning to measure the breath smell by a new type machine. Many of the patients in these facilities had no teeth. Even those who have teeth are suffered from periodontal diseases. We are going to follow the change of plaque bacteria, oral malodor, and systemic health condition after dental treatment or oral care. (Approved by an Ethics Committee of Fukuoka Dental College,. Marginal periodontitis found in the aged or handicapped patients are caused by bacteria in periodontal pockets. Porphyromonas gingivalis and Tannerella forsythia are considered to be important periodontopathogens, and it is suggested that these bacteria are implicated in the production of oral malodor. These two bacteria, which we are trying to isolate from the aged and disabled patients in the facility, are simultaneously isolated from active periodontitis sites, and these two bacteria may have some interaction in periodontal pockets. Therefore, we performed an animal experiment and investigated the growth of these bacteria in murine body by measuring the antibody titers after injection of these bacteria. After mixed injection of these two bacteria into mice, serum antibody titers against P. gingivalis increased as the amount of injected T. forsythia. This result suggests that T. forsythia stimulated the growth of P. gingivalis in vivo. We further confirmed this growth promotion by an in vitro experiment. Less
