| Research Abstract |
The purpose of this research is to explore the clinical judgments which psychiatric nurses make on patients in seclusion rooms. At first, the focus group interviews were carried out in two hospitals(A public hospital and B private hospital).
The participants were 5 - 6 nurses in each hospital who have psychiatric nursing experience of 5 years or more. The narrative texts were interpreted by the researcher and the judgments and the responses to the requests from patients in seclusion rooms were extracted. As a result, the following 5 categories emerged: 1)The, observation point; 2)The factors which influence the judgment of acceptance of a patient's request to get released; 3)The way of being concerned with the requests; 4)The nurse's feelings to the patient, who demands to get released ; 5)The range of the role of the nurse.
At second,15 nurses were observed and interviewed about their clinical judgments in private C hospital. Nursing judgment and responses to the patients' requests were identified from these observed data and narrative texts. The major findings were as follows. The nursing clinical judgment was classified into 7 categories : 1)The observation point; 2)The understanding emotion of patients requests,3)The reasons for the selected care,4)Their safety assistance 5)The prompt of the interactions, 6)The empowerment approach,7) The nurse's feelings to the patients.
In clinical judgments, the following were suggested precise knowledge, understanding emotion of the patients requests, seeing the situation in its right perspective is important.
