| Research Abstract |
Fifty patients each for the experimental group (E-group: telephone support group) and the control group (C-group) were sent the baseline questionnaires. Return mail cards were sent to E-group to confirm the appointments of the telephone supports. The researcher and two collaborators gave the telephone supports on monthly basis for 12 months to the patients who had replied to the cards. The end-point questionnaires were sent to E-group as we had completed 12 of telephone supports for them and to C-group as it had passed 12 months since their leaving from hospital. All questionnaires were collected through the mail. The objects of the analysis were E-group of 29 and C-group of 30 who had answered to both of the baseline and end-point questionnaires.
There was no significant difference of age, gender, disease type, disease duration, HbA_<1C>, and distress related to the diet between the two groups at baseline. The hypothesis (1)"The distress related to diabetes after 12 months is better in E-group than that in C-group" was proved as the distress was significantly reduced in E-group. The distress was significantly reduced at end-point compared to at baseline in E-group. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in C-group.
The hypothesis (2)"Glycemic control after 12 months is better in E-group than that in the C-group" was not proved as it showed no significant difference. However it was recognized that HbA_<1C> was significantly improved at end-point compared to at baseline in E-group whereas there was no significant difference in C-group.
These results showed that the telephone support reduced the distress though it was not effective enough to improve glycemic control.
