Research Abstract |
With the aim of understanding how prenatal notification is being made to mothers having the children with cleft lip and cleft palate, and developing the model for prenatal supporting, interviews were conducted with twelve mothers and thirteen medical staffers-doctors, nurses, midwives and speech therapists. The supporting model which was made on the basis of the results of the interviews dictates : Checking the mother's will to receive prenatal diagnosis Adequate manner of notification : (1)notifying either the mother or the mother and her companion in an appropriate time ; (2)making a medical geneticist, a genetic counselor or a genetics nurse join notification, as well as a nurse ; (3)using a quiet and comfortable room which ensures privacy Notifying about items which can relieve the mother of worries and give her hope for the future : (1)the condition of the disease and a treatment plan which includes additional information from specialists in the related fields ; (2)a long-term prognosis which deals with problems with care and education, and suggestions to cope with them ; (3)social resources such as public subsidies and Association of Parents with Children with Physical Disabilities Continual support after notification : (1)introducing an experienced peer counselor, when in need ; (2)counseling the whole family always in the mother's place to help their process of accepting the child and getting recovered ; (3)involving a genetic counselor and a genetics nurse in the health care team This supporting model received comments such as"workable"or"within the range of effort"from the obstetricians who cooperated in interviews. Further presentation of the supporting model to the field of obstetrics is envisaged. But, in order to put the continual support after notification into effect, training genetic counselors and genetics nurses is in immediate need.
