Research Abstract |
Our holistic education project showed the effectiveness of employing the modern English plays in literary education. In doing so, the teachers and the students were in the same context of learning (translation→publication of scripts→stage rehearsal→re-examination of the scripts), and through connection to the community both of them called forth a passionate love of leaning.During the term of the project, we used the following five plays in class, and the teachers and the students actually put on the four of them in a civic theater in Fukuoka. 1 Closer by Patrick Marber (Iwai) Iwai used this play in class, and we put it on with the students in a theater (2002). In 2005, we put it on with the students again, and before and after the performance in 2005, we made a close examination of the script and the movie Closer (2004)from the creative, comparative and practical points of view. 2 Howard Katz by Patrick Marber (Iwai, Ueda and Michiyuki) After publishing the translation of this play from Kaichosha publishing company we put this play on with the students. After this Ueda and Iwai used this script in each class in 2003 and 2004 respectively, and re-read and re-examined the play from various points of view. 3 Artby Yasmina Reza (Iwai and Michiyuki) Michiyuki translated this play into Japanese and used it in class (2003). We put it on in a theater with the students. After this Iwai used this play in class and made an examination of it (2004). 4 Stones in his Pockets by Marie Jones (Michiyuki) Michiyuki translated this play into Japanese and used it in class (2004 and 2005). 5 Dealer's Choice by Patrick Marber (Iwai, Ueda and Michiyuki) Ueda used this play in class (2004). Publication of the Japanese Translation (2006). We are planning to put it on in November. In 2005 Ueda made a report of this project from the viewpoint of heuristic and holistic education in the annual conference of the English Literary Society of Japan (Kyushu part).
