Research Abstract

本研究の目的は、大脳左右半球の機能分化の発達過程を、近赤外線分光法による脳機能イメージングによって明らかにすることにある。これまでの予備実験で用いた視空間性ワーキングメモリ課題と一般知能(general intelligence)検査課題を遂行中の未就学児(5〜6才)の脳活動を、光トポグラフィーにより計測したところ、視空間性ワーキングメモリ課題と一般知能課題の成績が相関し、前頭前皮質の一部は両課題遂行中に共通に活動し、その活動のパターンは両課題間で相関することがわかった。これらの結果から、一般知能は、視空間性ワーキングメモリ能力と相関し、両機能は未就学児において前頭前皮質の共通の神経システムを共有することが示唆される。
また、コンディショナルな反応抑制が必要なGo/No-Go課題とそのコントロール課題を遂行中の大人と未就学児の前頭前皮質の活動を比較・解析した。その結果、未就学児は大人と同レベルの成績でGo/No-Go課題を遂行でき、そして、大人でも未就学児でも前頭前皮質がNo-Go反応に関連した活動を示すことを発見した。また、未就学児のコントロール課題の成績は大人と比べて有意に低く、かつ、大人とは対照的に、No-Go反応で活動した脳部位の多くがコントロール課題でも異なった時間経過での活動を示すことがわかった。これらの結果から、未就学児において、前頭前皮質は反応抑制に関する機能的な神経システムを既に持っているが、状況に応じてこの神経システムを適切に使用できないことが示唆される。
これまでに未就学児における高次脳機能のイメージング研究はほとんどなかったが、本研究の成果は、脳機能分化の発達過程の解明に寄与し、今後高次脳機能を「脳の発達過程」の観点から理解・探求する道を開く重要な成果の一つと考えられる。
