Research Abstract

本研究では、医療用PET装置などに用いられているシンチレータの新たな発光中心として、Yb^<3+>のチャージトランスファー(CT)状態からの発光について検討した。Yb^<3+>イオンのシンチレーションはparity許容であることから遷移が早く、ホストにより特性が大きく異なることから、本研究では様々なホスト中での発光特性について研究を行った。研究室独自のマイクロ引下げ法を駆使して結晶のスクリーニングのみならず、結晶形状制御法の確立までを試みた。Lu_3Al_5O_<12>(LuAG)などのガーネット結晶、YAlO_3(YAP)などペロブスカイト結晶を中心に、アパタイト結晶、ボレート結晶などの結晶系にYbイオンをドープし、シンチレーション特性を評価した。その結果、CTからの発光は蛍光寿命が非常に早く、室温では、Yb:YAPにおいて0.6nsと、現在用いられているCe:LSOの40ns、BGOの300nsなどと比較して大きく上回ることが分かった。また、温度によって発光量および蛍光寿命が大きく変動し、室温では発光強度が低いものの寿命が非常に早く、低温では発光量・蛍光寿命ともに従来材料に匹敵する、あるいは上回る値を示した。蛍光寿命が温度により制御可能であることは従来のシンチレータには見られない特徴である。Ceをドープした結晶と異なり、結晶中にGa^<3+>イオンが存在しても発光すること、格子定数により発光波長が変化など、発光原理にかかわるいくつもの挙動も明らかとなった。次世代のPET装置では、TOF型PETで1nsを切る蛍光寿命をもつシンチレータ材、DOI型PETでわずかに寿命の異なる2種類のシンチレータ材料が必要とされており、今回の結果は、Yb系シンチレータがこれらのPET用シンチレータとして適していることを示している。また特にLuAG結晶については、μ-PD法により、角型などの形状制御技術の開発にも成功した。
