Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
With the development of network technology, human beings have entered the era of new media in 21st Century. The new media, compared with traditional media, has its own characteristics, in which the local context of different countries plays an important role in figuring such characteristics. In my project, I mainly focus on the new media in China in reporting emergency incidents, to analyze the new media in China context with the case study method. Currently I have finished two cases and submitted into journals. The first case mainly focuses on a qualitative content analysis of air-pollution-related knowledge resources posted on the most influential micro-blog account, that of the People’s Daily, to discuss the role of new media in environmental education of the public in China and to discuss its influence and shortcomings in constructing environmental knowledge for the public, compared with traditional methods of environmental education. The second case examines the role of the microblog using the 2015 Tianjin port explosions. In the case, the delayed response by the traditional media and continued diversion of the incident invoked outrage among the public, who were kept updated by active micro bloggers. From this brief research, this case concludes that as netizen numbers grow and more agencies are added to netizens’ voices, the microblog obviously has become the indispensable new media platform in China, although it is still dismissed as an unreliable and valueless source by government officials.
