Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In the reporting timeframe, the Fellow completed studies in two cities - Jakarta, Indonesia and Chennai, India. Both studies estimated the economic values of various water quality improvements (swimmable and fishable water quality based on the national water quality standards) through application of Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) through two-stage payment card technique. There were two surveys in each case, pilot survey and main survey. Results of Jakarta study suggest that the less than half of the residents are willing to contribute to a program that will improve the quality of the city’s waterbodies. Residents of Jakarta expressed monthly use WTP of US$1.70 for swimmable water quality and US$1.08 for fishable water quality, whereas one-time payed non-use WTP US$1.75 and US$1.18 accordingly for above-mentioned water qualities. Aggregated average total economic value is US$89 million per year. In case of Chennai city, 56% of its residents are willing to contribute to programs aimed to improve water quality in the city’s waterbodies. Moreover, use WTP was estimated equal to US$0.58 for swimmable water quality and US$0.52 for fishable water quality; non-use WTP showed US$2.52 and US$2.21 accordingly. The main drivers that impact WTP in both cases are: income and educational level of city’s inhabitants. The findings could provide policymakers and water professionals with useful information about taxpayers’ support for, and preferred budget for water quality improvement programs and projects in the city.
