Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In the fiscal year 2017, the fellow worked on data analysis and development of a second research paper for publication. The data was drawn from household surveys conducted in Malawi from September to November 2016. The surveys were conducted in collaboration with the Food Security Impacts of Industrial Crops Expansion in Sub-Saharan Africa (FICESSA) project. The study aimed at exploring the use of incentive based mechanisms including Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) as a tool for motivating industrial crop farmers to participate in conservation of forest and adopt sustainable agriculture practices. Hence a paper exploring farmers' willingness to participate in a PES scheme was written to highlight the study findings. The major findings include that a majority of farmers have a positive attitude towards forest conservation and adoption of sustainable farming practices. However, their investment in forest conservation activities is constrained by limited resources such as land and income. Therefore, a majority of respondents indicated willingness to participate in in a PES scheme.
In July, 2017, the fellow organized feedback sessions with stakeholders and communities that participated in the research, and those in policy implementation office. This aimed at disseminating research results to the implementers, so that the research has impact on the ground. On 16 August, the fellow presented the findings at UNU-IAS. Additionally, in FY2017, the fellow participated in a number of international conferences and symposiums.
