Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The fabrication of polysaccharide films with metal cation cross-linking was achieved and the mechanical properties of the films were tested.
Optimum crosslinking of carrageenan films with calcium ions yielded films with the desired properties of high tensile strength and elongation, transparency and bio-compatibility.
Films were also tested for water permeability revealing values similar to other commercial biofilms.
Sensing properties of the films were tested by incorporating an organic dye to act as an indicator for acidic gases. Reversible sensing of hydrogen chloride was achieved using this method. This work is currently under preparation for publication.
