In this study, we examined the effect of a surrounding or back-ground surface on a three-dimensional perception, in particular, depth, direction and numerosity perception. We found that binocular or monocular visual direction of stimuli, depth seen in a photograph, and perceived numerosity are affected by the surrounding or back-graund surface. We propose a disparity-processing-load hypothesis to explain the findings.
