Outline of Final Research Achievements

We have developed optoelectronically-active pi-conjugated liquid molecules at room temperature. In this system, the functional pi-core is wrapped with soft and bulky branched alkyl chains, therefore the core unit is highly stabilized and could show its intrinsic function.
In this study, we have investigated and found the role of molecular symmetry, alkyl-pi ratio as well as viscosity on creating a kinetically stable liquid molecule utilizing alkyl-anthracene or -pyrene liquid molecules as the model. We have also found that how to obtain highly functional liquids such as liquids with luminescent- and spin-function and their switching.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

機能性有機分子の機能分子部位固有の機能を、安定且つ形状に依存せず意図通りに発揮できることで、様々なフレキシブル・ストレッチャブルデバイスの活性層基材としての利用の期待が持てる。そのためには、速度論的に極めて安定な液体であり、且つ光・電子機能も普遍である必要がある。本研究では、アルキル化アントラセンまたはピレンを基材としてこれら課題を首尾良く解決した。
実際、国内外の他の研究グループからは、過冷却液体状態とは認識せず、謝って液体材料として報告している例も散見されるため、本研究で得られた分子設計指針、および過冷却状態の見極め手法は、機能性液体のさらなる発展に大いに役立つ。
