Outline of Final Research Achievements

In order to understand the role of neural activity in columnar maturation in the neocortex, whisker-barrel system in the mouse was used as a model. Our in vivo imaging analyses using the GCaMP6s have revealed spontaneous activity with a unique spatio-temporal pattern in the neonatal mouse barrel cortex.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ヒトを含む哺乳類の脳では膨大な数のニューロンが回路を形成し、多様な情報の処理や行動の制御を行っている。そうした複雑な神経回路は、ゲノム情報によって大まかに作られた後、主に生後に実際に使われる中で調整され、成熟する。今回、そうした子供期の脳における回路試運転の実態の一端が、マウス体性感覚野をモデルとした研究で明らかになった。この成果は、ヒトの正常な子供の脳の発達の理解、および、その破綻による発達障害や精神疾患の理解にもつながることが期待される。
