Outline of Final Research Achievements

Comparison of Chara braunii draft genome and Klebosrmidum nitens, land plant genomes clarified which gene are present before the divergence of Charophyceae and land plants and lineage specific gain/expansion in each of Charophyceae and land plant lineages.
Further, with the progress of genome sequencing, draft genomes of all major phyla except Coleochaetophyceae have become available. For Coleochaete, RNA-seq analyses have been done and most of expressed gene sequence data are made accessible.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

われわれ人間は陸上で生活し、主に陸上で育つ植物と植物を食べる動物を食べることによって生きている。また二酸化炭素の固定の多くも陸上植物によってなされる。この陸上植物がどのようにして生じたのかの成り立ちを知る上では、陸上植物に近縁な藻類のことをよく知る必要がある。その一環として、陸上植物にある程度近い藻類の全遺伝子配列の決定を進めた。これにより、陸上植物がどのようにして成立したのかの理解が深まる。また、陸上環境への適応メカニズムについてもよりよく考えられるようになる。
