Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Egypt has had the highest numbers of human infection cases of H5N1 influenza viruses. In this study, we performed comprehensive surveillance for avian influenza in Egypt and also investigated evolution dynamics of the viruses disseminating in the country. The results showed that not only the H5N1 viruses but also H9N2 viruses has now prevailed in Egypt with multiple human infection cases. Both viruses has accumulated mutations conferring an expanded host range including mammals. The two viruses also had high genetic compatibility, which may allow a reassortment event to create novel genotypic influenza viruses with pandemic potential.
