Outline of Final Research Achievements

Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is a negative-strand RNA virus causing a serious disease to tomato. This study aimed to investigate the replication mechanism of TSWV. Using a TSWV S RNA replication system in yeast, genome RNA sequences required for replication were determined. In addition, yeast mutants that did not support efficient TSWV RNA replication were identified.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

ウイルスは宿主の因子を利用して増殖する。当該因子が機能不全になった宿主ではウイルスは増殖することができないため、ウイルスの増殖機構を理解することは抗ウイルス戦略を考える上でも重要である。本研究では、独自に開発した実験系を用いることにより、トマトの重要病害であるトマト黄化えそウイルス（TSWV）が増殖に利用する因子の候補を多数同定した。本成果は、TSWVをはじめとするマイナス鎖RNAウイルスの増殖機構の理解を大きく進めると同時に、新たなウイルス抵抗性作物の作出に繋がる可能性がある。
