Outline of Annual Research Achievements

当該3年間における研究計画として、本年度はジラジカル液晶化合物の合成および物性評価の研究に従事した。ジラジカル液晶の研究では、非常に特異な磁気相互作用の検出に成功し、その起源解明に成功した。具体的には、SQUID磁束計を用いてモル磁化率の温度依存性を測定したところ、極低温においてジラジカル液晶は反強磁性的相互作用が見られたが、固体－液晶相転移にてモル磁化率の上昇は確認されなかった。しかしながら、ジアステレオマー添加物を少量（5wt%）加えた化合物の磁気相互作用を検討すると、極低温において反強磁性的相互作用と、固体－液晶相転移温度でモル磁化率の上昇が見られた。さらに磁化の磁場依存性の測定により、温度に依存しない非線形磁気成分の存在が示唆され、ジアステレオマーの存在が の磁気相互作用に大きな影響を与えていることが分かった。この理由として、ジアステレオマーの存在により相のドメインの不均一性が増加し、その結果不均一な分子間接触を示すドメイン領域が増加したためと考えられる。液晶以外のソフトマテリアルとしてヒドロゲルや有機ナノチューブが挙げられるが、それらは一次元鎖の分子集合体を形成し、一次元鎖中において秩序だった分子配列を有しているが液晶のような流動性はなく、「正の磁気液晶効果」は観測されていない。液晶と他のソフトマテリアルの分子集合構造の違いが磁気相互作用に影響を与えていると考えられる。つまり流動性がありながらも分子の配向秩序を有する性質が「正の磁気液晶効果」を引き起こすための重要なファクターではないかと予想される。また、これらの研究成果を積極的に公表し、学会誌等への発表1件、学会発表3件の業績を残した。
