Outline of Annual Research Achievements

クェーサーは銀河中心の超巨大ブラックホールの質量降着活動により非常に明るく光る天体である。これまでの小、中望遠鏡による探査から約200個のクェーサーが赤方偏移6以上の時代(宇宙年齢10億年未満)に発見されていたが、それらは非常に明るいものばかりである。我々は、すばる望遠鏡を用いて初の8m望遠鏡による大規模な低光度クェーサー探査を進めた。

まずSuprime-Camを用いた探査の結果、6.5平方度のサーベイ領域中に2つのクェーサーを分光同定し、赤方偏移6クェーサーの光度関数の低光度側に初めて有効な制限をつけた。またクェーサーが放出し得る電離光子は宇宙再電離に必要な量の20%未満であり、再電離の主たる担い手ではないことを始めて示した。
すばるの最新の広視野撮像装置であるHyper Suprime-Cam (HSC)を用いた更なる大規模クェーサー探査の結果、現状60個を超える数の大量発見に成功している。更に、計6天体をGemini/GNIRS, VLT/XSHOOTERで観測した結果、ブラックホール質量(10^7-9太陽質量)と降着率(エディントン比0.1-1)に同時代の明るいクェーサーには見られなかったバラつきがあることがわかった。特に、赤方偏移6以前に最も早く活発な質量成長を止めてしまった超巨大ブラックホールの存在を示した。また1つのターゲットが”Red quasar”と呼ばれる、ダストに埋もれた爆発的星形成とtype-Iクェーサーの中間段階にあるクェーサーであることも示した。
今後は現在進んでいるすばる望遠鏡の追観測や、ハッブル望遠鏡の次世代衛星であるJWSTによる追観測によって、赤方偏移6、7の超巨大ブラックホールの質量分布や降着率分布など、統計的な性質を明らかにしていく。
