Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は、局所に正20面体希土類クラスター構造を有するTsai型クラスター結晶の磁性に着目して研究を遂行してきた。最終年度の本年は、昨年度までに明らかにしたAu-Si-Tb近似結晶の特異な結晶場励起が、局所クラスターの正20面体対称性に由来していることを明らかとするため、その比較として、中性子非弾性散乱によるAu-Si-Pr近似結晶の結晶場励起スペクトルの比較を行った。その結果として、Au-Si-Tbでは明瞭に観察されていた数meV領域における結晶場励起の消失が見られた。直ちに両者の結晶場の比較ができる結果とはならなかったが、Au-Si-Pr結晶場励起の消失については、今後さらに2K以下での物性測定等も併せて、その物理的な背景を明らかにする必要がある。また、準結晶と近似結晶の結晶場励起スペクトルの検討も重要な課題である。この観点から、物質合成及び中性子非弾性散乱実験を行った。準結晶と近似結晶の結晶場励起が観測されるエネルギーはほとんど同一だが、その幅は準結晶のほうが広いことが分かった。これは、準結晶では原理的に希土類のサイトが多数存在することと対応しているように考えているが、準結晶自体の熱的安定性が問題となっており、この点も明らかにする必要がある。
一方で、特に熱的に安定な準結晶や近似結晶はヒュームロザリー則に従って形成すると考えられており、Al系合金で相次いで発見されてきた歴史的経緯があるが、同族元素であるGa系の準結晶・近似結晶の存在はほとんど皆無である。そこで、Ga系合金における準結晶を含む複雑構造結晶の形成の可能性を明らかにするため、Ga-遷移金属系の状態図の再検討を行った。その結果、Ga-Cu-Ru系において準結晶や近似結晶の形成は確認できなかったものの、新たな金属間化合物(Ga-Cu-Ru合金においては今のところ唯一の3元系金属間化合物でもある)の存在を実証した。
