Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究は高エネルギー天体において、相対論的ジェットやパルサー星雲などで発生しているプラズマの強磁場エネルギーの散逸過程について解明を行った。

今年度は最終年度として研究計画に従い、まずは相対論的磁気リコネクションが生成する乱流の効果について研究を行った。前年度までの研究では乱流が相対論的磁気リコネクションでの散逸効率を上げることを証明していたが、乱流の起源については未知のままであった。本年度はその乱流の起源について、tearing不安定性と交換不安定性に類する不安定性により自発的に作り出されることを実際に示した。しかしその乱流は上流の磁場のエネルギーの0.01%程度しか変換されておらず、非相対論的な乱流しか駆動されなかった。一方磁気リコネクション率は0.004と、観測で期待される0.01に近い値までは乱流により大きくなることが示された。これにより高エネルギー天体物理の強磁場問題は、磁気リコネクションが起きれば解決可能であることは示したが、一方で高エネルギー天体物理のフレア現象は起きにくくなるという示唆を得た。

また相対論的なプラズマではWeibel不安定という磁場を生成する不安定性についてスーパーコンピュータ『京』を用いた大規模プラズマシミュレーションを用いた研究を行った。Particle-in-Cell法を用いた3次元計算を行い、世界最大規模の計算を行った。この結果、相対論的Weibel不安定性は2次元と3次元では大きく振る舞いが異なることを明らかにした。さらに京が可能にした長時間計算により、世界で初めて電流の上限値であるAlfven電流まで成長し、Weibel不安定性が生み出す磁場の上限値を世界で初めて明らかにした。本研究結果は現在世界中で行われている高強度レーザーによるWeibel不安定性や無衝突衝撃波の再現実験などに大きな影響を与えることが期待される。
