Outline of Annual Research Achievements

環境照度を記録するデータロガーを用いてカツオドリ成鳥の非繁殖期の移動を調べた結果、北は黄海から南はパプアニューギニア北方まで、彼らの越冬海域は個体により様々であることが明らかになった。また、移動を複数年記録した個体のデータを解析したところ、各個体は複数年で同様の移動パターンを示していた。一方、渡り開始のタイミングは当該年度の繁殖成績が関係しており、繁殖に失敗した年は繁殖に成功した年よりも早く繁殖地を渡去していた。非繁殖期間の日数は個体内で大きく変動しないため、繁殖に失敗した個体ほど翌年に繁殖地に戻ってくる時期が早い。本種では個体間で産卵時期に約2か月の幅があるが、前年度の繁殖成績が当該年度の繁殖時期に影響していることがわかった。
繁殖期にはカツオドリは約40km圏内の沿岸域で主に餌を採っており、また日中のみ採餌していた。そのため、採餌努力量の大幅な増加は限られ、2雛を育てることで育雛期間が長くなる、もしくは各雛の巣立ち体重が軽くなることが予想される。本研究課題のこれまでの結果から、巣立ち時期が遅くなるほど幼鳥の生存率は低下することが示唆されており、無条件兄弟殺しは雛にとって給餌量の増加および早い巣立ちタイミングという利点があると考えられる。一方、現在までの研究結果からは、親にとっての利点について妥当な理由は不明である。一つの可能性として、本種は環境の季節変化が乏しい熱帯海域で繁殖するため、親鳥は餌資源の良い年には2雛育てるという日和見的な繁殖形質が維持されているのかもしれない。この点については今後さらに検証が必要である。また、上記の研究に加え、繁殖投資量がその後の行動に及ぼす影響についての一般性を調べる為、1シーズンに複数の卵を産むウミネコについても同様のデータ解析をおこない、本種においても雛数が多いほど非繁殖期の採餌活動量が増加することが明らかになった。
