価数と軌道に由来した非磁性量子相転移と臨界現象

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

私は今年度、0.6 Kで軌道秩序を示すPrV2Al20の磁歪/熱膨張測定および米国国立高磁場研究所にて磁気抵抗およびホール効果の測定を行った。磁歪/熱膨張計は前年度に希釈冷凍機に取り付けて、最低温度 100 mK まで測定ができるようにした。
磁歪/熱膨張測定の結果、0.6 Kの相転移を観測し、その変化量が非常に小さいことから、電子軌道が互い違いに整列する"反強"的な軌道秩序であることを見出した。そして軌道秩序が壊れる臨界磁場に向かって、熱膨張係数が発散的に増大し、臨界磁場で符号が変わることを観測した。この結果を熱力学的に考えると、臨界磁場に向かってエントロピーが増大することに対応する。これは我々のグループで主張している、磁場誘起の軌道秩序の量子臨界揺らぎの存在をサポートする結果である。
また我々は、まだ未解明だった[110]方向に磁場を印加した場合の磁気相図に関して、最大 31 T までの磁気抵抗測定を行った。そして15 T-24 Tの領域に新たな軌道秩序相を見出し、24 T より高磁場で軌道秩序が閉じることを明らかにした。さらに我々は軌道秩序相の数値シミュレーションを行い、実際に24 T付近で軌道秩序相が閉じることを再現した。
これにより、前年度以前の結果と合わせて、PrV2Al20の軌道秩序の異方的な磁気相図の全容を明らかにした。
最後にPrV2Al20のホール効果測定を行い、キャリア数が通常金属に近い値を示すことを明らかにした。これは通常金属とは大きく異なる電気抵抗率の温度依存性の起源が、半金属的なバンドからくるものではなく、我々が考えている四極子による近藤効果である可能性を支持する。
