Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Fertility and survivorship were reconstructed by examining human skeletal remains from Jomon sites in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Chugoku districts, and Yayoi sites in Chugoku and Kyushu districts. Results show that in the northern Jomon population, fertility was high and survivorship was low, in southern Yayoi populations, fertility was low and survivorship was high. We have to examine the fertility and survivorship of southern Jomon populations and of central and northern Yayoi populations. Stable isotope analysis has been applied to subadult skeletons from Jomon (Chubu district), aboriginal Yayoi and immigrant Yayoi (Kyushu district) to estimate weaning ages in these populations. The age at the end of weaning was estimated at 3.5 years, but were not reconstructed in aboriginal and immigrant Yayoi populations due to the large variation of stable isotope ratios. In the future, different methods need to be applied for these populations to estimate accurate weaning ages.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
