Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In this study, we developed molecular targeting system for various chronic diseases. At these lesion sites, many activated myofibroblasts and stellate cells are proliferated. These cells highly express type 3 intermediate filaments (vimentin, desmin, glial fibrillary acidic protein(GFAP), and peripherin). We found that these proteins are expressed on cell surface and have N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc)-binding activities. Moreover, new GlcNAc-bearing polymer, AC-GlcNAc, that can rigidly bind to these proteins was developed. These findings are very useful for developing molecular targeting system for various chronic diseases.
