Outline of Final Research Achievements

I researched lots of Buddhist and Shinto statues of the Edo period which stay in the various regionz of Japan widely. As a result, I made clear that they had the significance that was important to local culture and Japanese overall culture both sides.

これまで美術史はもちろん地域の郷土史や宗教史においても無視されていて、わずかに民俗学や民藝の愛好家から個別に関心を持たれてきた近世の地方仏の実態を把握し、その臓器的な価値を初めて明らかにした。これによって近世の全国各地に展開した仏師以外による宗教彫刻の評価を進め、さらには日本における信仰と造形の本質的な性格も確かめることを得た。
