Outline of Final Research Achievements

This project investigated the distribution of definite marking of Malayo-Sumbawan languages. The main findings are as follows.
(1) Standard varieties of Malay, Sasak, Sumbawa have not developed definite markers, while some Malay varieties such as colloquial Indonesian and Manado Malay, as well as Balinese, has developed definite markers.
(2) Correlation between the development of definite marker and the clause structures that each language (or variety) exhibit that initially hypothesized was not observed.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

英語の定冠詞などが担う定性標示は、標示が一般的である印欧語などにおいては重要な研究テーマとして取り上げられてきたが、比較的未発達な言語では十分な研究が行われてこなかった。本研究の意義は後者の言語群に属するMalayo-Sumbawan言語を対象に定性表現の諸相を明らかにしたことである。バリ語、マナド・マレーなど定性標示が発達した言語の記述を通して、Malayo-Sumbawan言語というグループ内、さらには、一つの言語の変種間でも定性表示の発達の度合いに差があることがわかり、定性標示が独自に発達しうることを示した。
