Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this study was to develop English language teaching materials, especially textbooks targeting students who want to be global leaders with robust communication and problem-solving abilities. Comparing Japanese textbooks dealing with productive ability in English with British counterparts, we analyzed what enables students to carry on discussions without serious conflicts. As a result, we found that British students are usually instructed to address subjects of discussion by themselves and to try to reach an agreement through the discussion itself. Based on the results of this analysis, we published two textbooks in 2018: Winning Presentations from Seibido Publishing Company and Active Presentations from Kinseido; the latter focuses on active learning. We are compiling lists of subjects and expressions, including words and phrases suitable for use in an earnest and meaningful but calm and peaceful discussion under another grant.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

日本で教育を受けた英語学習者は、グローバルな環境で積極的な発言や提示された話題や課題に対し、適切な受け答えができにくい実態がある。これは、言語面の英語力が不十分であるというよりも、① 主に文化・社会的背景に由来する話題に関する共有すべき知識の欠如、偏り等とともに、② 議論を始め、展開し、収束させるストラテジーに関する知識や訓練が足りないためと考えられる。こうした状況を克服するには、グローバルな環境、日本の英語学習環境にない、実際的な環境にあって深刻な対立なく議論を進められる方策、表現方法を学ぶ教材を開発することは、日本の英語教育に authenticity を伴った新要素を加えることになる。
