Outline of Final Research Achievements

I approached Karl Mannheim's arguments on "Planning for Freedom" from three angles: democratization of mind (culture), Christianity, and rationality. I collected primary materials of "the Moot", Christian intellectual group that Mannheim actively participated in England. Through reading these materials I found the difference between Mannheim and his fellow member T. S. Eliot on democratization of culture. I also reconsider F. A. Hayek and K. R. Popper's criticism of Mannheim's idea of planning, and I showed that their critique of planning was not relevant to Mannheim's concept of "planning".

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

イギリス亡命後のマンハイムの知的営為がドイツ期のものより知的高みにないという従来の解釈に対して、マンハイムが「自由のための計画」論を提唱したことがイギリスの知的世界（必ずしも社会学界ではない）に対して少なからぬ影響力を持ったことの手がかりをつかむことができた。社会学者マンハイムとしてでなく一思想家（民主主義者）としてのマンハイムを、1930～40年代イギリスの知的文脈の中で読み解くという課題への入り口に立つことができた。また、これまでほとんど埋もれていた一次資料を入手することで、亡命知識人マンハイムがイギリスの知的世界にどの程度受け入れられたのかを考察する準備ができたと考えられる。
