Outline of Final Research Achievements |
In the central nervous system of the mammalian brain, three types of glial cells have been identified; astrocyte, microglia and oligodendrocyte. Among them, oligodendrocyte forms myelin around axons. Other types of glial cells might contribute to the synaptic functions of the brain by affecting the synapse formation/elimination. In this research, I analyzed the precise structure of astrocyte and microglia by using CLEM (Correlative anaylysis of light- and electron- microscopy) method. Particularly, I succeeded the comprehensive three-dimensional reconstruct of the fine protrusions of single microglia.
