Afar pastoralists in northern Ethiopia, who have been almost self-sufficient, are now being incorporated into the market economy system due to development of road networks and consequent expansion of market distribution areas. Using questionnaires and economic experiments, we conducted household surveys of pastoralists and investigated changes in conditions of marketing livestock products in Afar Region. We conducted econometric analyses using the collected household data and statistics of villages. We have found that shortage of local livestock markets is the major bottleneck in marketing of livestock products; however, traditional social norms to restrict milk marketing are changing.
