Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The aim of this study is to clarify the influence that Christianity has had on other religious traditions in China from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. It analyzes articles published in the mission journal Chinese Recorder (The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal), and investigates how Christian missionaries saw Confucianism, Daoism, Chinese Buddhism, and other religions of China. By doing so, this study elucidates the overall view Christian missionaries had of religion in China as well as their general understanding of what does and does not constitute "religion".
