Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Ag(111) and Au(111) surfaces have been observed with scanning tunneling microscope after a small amount of Si and Ge atoms have been deposited. After annealing a Si/Ag(111) surface, a fluid phase appeared with mobile step edges at room temperature. A similar phase appeared for Ge/Au(111) after Ge deposition without annealing. These phases could be related to the low temperature crystallization of Si and Ge using metal catalysts.
