Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we performed in vitro (neuron-oligodendrocyte co-culture)、ex vivo (slice culture)、in vivo (juvenile social isolaion mice and BTBR mice) experiments and aimed to validate the association between myelin formation and its relevant neuronal function and synapse formation. Our study provides no evidnece for the causation, but indicates that there are associations between myelin formation and neuronal function as well as myelin formation and synapse function.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

前頭前野V/VI層のミエリン形成と同部位の活動性、および前頭前野V/VI層のミエリン形成と同部位に存在する錐体細胞への興奮性入力との間の何らかの相関が示唆された。これまでは脳機能といえば、ニューロンを中心とした脳回路の機能に着目されてきたが、本研究成果は、ニューロンでないグリア細胞の一つであるオリゴデンドロサイトが形成する前頭前野のミエリンも精神疾患の治療ターゲットになる可能性が示された。
