I examined institutional changes of arts in the New York City from the 1920s to 1970s, through analyzing archival materials in Archive of American Arts. Especially, I identified the expansion of art worlds in the New York City, which is caused by the emergence of global arts markets and agglomeration of activities of buying and selling art works in New York City.
The expansion of art worlds has not necessarily been created by post-industrialization processes of economy or municipal government policies, which have argued in existing studies. But also internal transformation processes of art worlds are quite important. My research also has examined the expansion of art worlds increased artists and alternative spaces that had various values and aesthetics and then contributed to diversify New York's art worlds.
