Ultrafast reactions in femtosecond order were revealed by pump-probe measurements using free-electron laser and optical laser at X-ray free-electron laser facility, SACLA. In the observed ultrafast reactions, different reaction mechanisms were revealed.
X線を気相分子照射して起こる反応の初期段階を、フェムト秒スケールで観測した例はこれまでになかった。X線を生体分子に照射すると放射線損傷と呼ばれる分子の破壊が起こるが、そのメカニズムは解明されていない。放射線損傷を制御できれば、例えば放射線を用いたがん治療を正確に効率よく実施することが可能となる。今回の研究成果を引き金として、放射線損傷機構解明に向けた大きな発展が期待される。
